Last January on a particularly hectic day (I believe the 608 performance day) I arrived at my office to find a fax with an offer for Mission of Burma to headline the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. I believe that day we added the first Paradise show so things were truly Inexplicable and surreal. Well, Friday night that offer was consummated. As much as we all looked forward to coming out West, The Fillmore was the most exciting aspect. For some reason, the live show climate in SF is one of the best in the world, and playing the Fillmore is truly special. There are amazing photographs of many of the legendary shows as well as posters of them all over the walls. I went to KUSF with Clint and Roger for a guest DJ segment and interview. The station produced a hilarious Burma spot that we hope to have streaming on the site shortly. We were met by Barbara Manning, who is a huge fan and sported a consonant shirt. From there it was on to soundcheck where we saw many familiar faces. The show was powerful and passionate. A highlight was The Dils’ “Class War” originally written and performed in SF. We were happy to see Jenny Toomey, Adam Pfaler (ex-Jawbreaker) and Richard Balyut (ex-Versus) who have a new band, Whysall Lane, and Sandy Pearlman (ex-Blue Oyster Cult). It was great to play with Mike Watt who played with his new bass/organ/drums trio the Secondmen followed by Silkworm.
